Project Details

This project was constructed by the Forrestal Center Corp., a private entity in cooperation with the New Jersey Department of Transportation. The project involved the construction of approaches, roadway and a bridge over existing U.S. Rte. 1 in Plainsboro, New Jersey. Bridge construction required the installation of sheeting adjacent to the active Rte. 1 corridor to protect excavations. The bridge was founded on conventional spread footing abutments. Unlike many of the bridges spanning Rte. 1 today, this bridge was designed with deep steel girders allowing the elimination of the center pier. This design, however, made steel erection with traffic very difficult. The bridge deck was concrete supported on steel girders and was constructed entirely over the existing Rte. 1 corridor while maintaining traffic at all times.

The developer required that the project be constructed on a fast track and the entire project was completed on an accelerated basis. The project required close coordination for both staging and traffic control. Additional facets of the project included traffic signalization, utilities, drainage, embankment and roadway construction.

This project was completed on time and within budget.

The project received a great deal of industry recognition for its design, construction and the time frame in which the project was completed.
