Contract #W-4503 was one of the many NJ Turnpike contracts associated with the widening and reconstruction of Interchange 8A. This contract involved the construction of new substructures, new bridge decks, drainage and roadway construction.
Several new structures were constructed under this contract, including a 7 span concrete deck bridge over the existing northbound and southbound lanes of the NJ Turnpike. The bridge structures were constructed on conventional concrete abutments and piers. The bridge deck was concrete on steel girders. There were also 3 smaller bridges made of similar materials, which spanned over the existing northbound and southbound truck lanes. The structures on this project were constructed while maintaining Turnpike traffic.
Several retaining walls were constructed to support the ramps leading to the bridges and toll area. The embankments for all of the ramps and approaches constructed under this contract required extensive staging.
The existing Turnpike also required widening and traffic pattern changes to meet the new ramps and structures. These widening activities required new items along the existing Turnpike. Some of these items included new drainage facilities, roadway pavements, and a new lighting system.
This project was completed on time and within budget.
