Our Woodbridge Station project involved the demolition and reconstruction of a high-level, center island platform along the NJ Coast Rail Line located between Main Street and Green Street in Woodbridge, New Jersey. The existing platform and facilities were deteriorated, outdated and in need of reconstruction. Many commuters utilize NJ Transit's Woodbridge Station every day, so special attention was given during the design of this project so that the inconveniences faced by NJ Transit's customers during construction would be minimized. The demolition and reconstruction work performed was divided into three stages to allow the station to remain operational throughout the duration of the project.
Phase I was the rehabilitation of an existing kiosk building. The interior was completely demolished, and reconstructed with a new storage room, mechanical / electric room and new rest room facilities. Exterior improvements completed during this phase included the rehabilitation of brickwork on the kiosk's canopy columns, the cleaning and repainting of all existing steel, the installation of brick pavers and other miscellaneous site work.
Phase II was the rehabilitation of the north side of the station. Included in this phase was the demolition of the north canopy and stairs, north platform building, the central canopy, and approximately 400 feet of the platform. Once demolition was completed, work began on construction of the new platform. The new platform was constructed using mini-piles, which support a structural steel frame, deck pans and a cast-in-place concrete platform. The new north canopy and stairs, as well as 250 feet of the new main canopy were also constructed during this phase. The newly constructed canopy consists of structural steel enclosed with both brick columns and metal ceiling panels, concealing all structural steel from the weather.
The third and final phase of this project included demolition and construction of the south side of the station. The south canopy and stairs, and 400 feet of the platform will be removed. Construction in Phase III included a new south canopy, stairs into the existing tunnel, remainder of the main canopy, and approximately another 400 feet of platform. Also included in Phase III are renovations to the existing tunnel and elevator, which were reconstructed to conform to ADA guidelines.
The Woodbridge Rail Station project was quite different from other NJ Transit projects in that it was designed in-house by NJ Transit and utilized methods of construction to ensure a durable and low maintenance platform for many years to come. One of the most significant methods utilized on this project was that all steel railings and exposed metals were required to be hot-dipped galvanized and painted. In addition, the use of ceiling panels and brickwork to cover all canopy structural steel will provide long lasting protection from the elements.
