This project was the first of several to construct a connection between the Newark Airport Monorail and Amtrak's Northeast Corridor. Modifications to the existing rail facilities were being accomplished to construct station passenger platforms under this contract. Two passenger platforms approximately 650' long were constructed adjacent to Amtrak's main line. The platforms are comprised of precast deck panels, a structural steel frame, and are supported by a grid of 18" steel pipe piles.
The majority of the work performed on this project was directly adjacent to Amtrak's main line and required close coordination and scheduling with railroad forces.
The main line modification activities included track bed construction, drainage facilities and two single span railroad bridges supported by 24" pipe piles. The project also included the construction of new catenary, signal bridge, and guy anchor foundations as well as the installation of catenary and portal signal bridges.
Staging and planning including the preparation of numerous Site Specific Work Plans were critical to progress the project. Much of the work on this project was completed during track outages, power outages, and fouling shots between train movements. The project required implementing a Health and Safety Plan and Quality Control Plan.
This project was completed on time and within budget
